Tui Lodge - Trout Fishing Guides
My interest in trout fishing started as a boy following my father fishing the Waiongongora River on the farm in Taranaki. This small quick flowing stream off Mt. Egmont was my first introduction to fly fishing. My first experience on the Tongariro River was in 1958, but I didn't return until 1970's & have enjoyed the fishing here ever since.
In June 1990 I was extremely fortunate in landing a 19lb Brown trout in the Tongariro River. This is a fish that one dreams about! Since then Andrew & I have caught several fish over that magic 10lb mark - both Rainbows & Browns.
I have had the pleasure of guiding fishermen and women from all over the world and for some of them, it has been a life time dream to catch a Trout in the Tongariro River. As a guide, the most satisfying part of my job is helping to make these dreams a reality!
Living on a dairy farm with a small mountain stream as a boundary, and a father interested in fly fishing, the seeds were laid for me to take up fly fishing. Every spare moment was spent on this little stream trying to outwit the cunning Tasmanian Brown trout.
This led to trips to the world famous Tongariro River, where the hard fighting rainbows & the large brown trout linger. Like most anglers, I had the ambition of catching one or two elusive double figure fish. This ambition has been fulfilled.
I enjoy fishing & guiding in the backcountry rivers with the feeling of being the only person on the river. I practice catch & release on these rivers, as they are wild fisheries.
I have had much pleasure in introducing people from all over the world to fly fishing in our paradise. With quite a few becoming close friends. A warm welcome awaits you - whether a beginner or experienced angler to experience our Kiwi hospitality & top class fly fishing.
